Summary

  • Stripe’s built-in reminders work for simple cases: a handful of overdue invoices a month and customers who pay on time.
  • Stripe covers scheduled emails and card retries: reminders before, on or after the due date, Smart Retries for failed cards, and marking invoices uncollectible at 30, 60 or 90 days.
  • Stripe doesn’t do the harder jobs: replying to customers, changing the wording as invoices age, raising late fees or sending a letter before action.
  • Three invoice chasing tools for Stripe users compared: Trove for the long tail of invoices Stripe’s reminders don’t catch, LedgerUp for replacing your whole invoicing process, Chaser for more debtor features such as early payment discounts.
  • Prices range from £50/month to $500/month: Trove from £50, Chaser from £199 and LedgerUp from $500.

How Stripe overdue invoice reminders work

Stripe has three native tools for getting paid.

  1. Overdue invoice reminders. Switched on in your billing settings, for unpaid one-off invoices, on all Stripe Invoicing plans.
    • You choose when each one goes: before, on or after the due date.
    • You can send more than one.
    • Stripe won’t send a reminder if a payment is already processing.
  2. Smart Retries for failed card payments. Stripe picks the best time to try again. The default is 8 tries within 2 weeks, and Stripe says it recovers 38% of failed payments on average (Stripe Invoicing).
  3. Marking invoices uncollectible. You can do this once they’re 30, 60 or 90 days past due. Source: Stripe’s automatic collection docs.

What Stripe’s invoice reminders don’t do

Stripe dunning is built around scheduled emails and card retries. Stripe’s documentation doesn’t describe:

  • Reading a customer’s reply.
  • Setting an expected payment date from it.
  • Chasing a different contact.
  • Raising a late fee.
  • Sending a letter before action.

Those are the jobs you do manually today.

By default, Stripe doesn’t retry failed Direct Debit payments (ACH Direct Debit is the exception). If your customers pay by Direct Debit, a failed payment can sit unnoticed.

How to automate Stripe invoice follow-up: what to look for

To automate Stripe invoice follow-up properly, start with the essentials.

Must-haves:

  1. Syncs invoices and payments from Stripe.
  2. Stops reminders the moment an invoice is paid.
  3. Sends from your own domain.

Nice to have:

  • Replies are read and acted on.
  • Reminders vary by customer.
  • Late fees can be raised.
  • You can see which customers are slipping.

Trove for Stripe: features and pricing

Trove connects to Stripe alongside Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent, on every plan including Essential.

What syncs from Stripe: invoices, customers, payments and credit notes. When a Stripe invoice is paid, the chase stops, and Trove can send your customer a thank-you message.

What Trove does on top of reminders:

  • Drafts personalised emails.
  • Handles PO requests.
  • Sets payment dates from customer replies.
  • Raises late fees.
  • Sends letters before action.

Trove’s data across thousands of overdue invoices shows 58% paid after one reminder and 80% after two. A chasing tool matters most after that second reminder, when a fixed schedule stops being enough and replies need handling.

Plans are fixed, with no revenue bands (all ex VAT):
